The facility opened in 1995 under the name Kissimmee Family Aquatic Center and was renamed the Makinson Aquatic Center in 2003 in honor of former City Commissioner/Mayor Bob Makinson, who passed away in July of 2007. In 2003, the center also received a make-over adding an underwater fantasy mural painted along the walls of the facility.
While the center is open to the public on a seasonal basis, it operates year-round as a training center for competitive swimmers, local lifeguards and programs that teach all ages how to swim.
The facility can also be rented for corporate gatherings and birthday parties. The professional and caring team that manages the day-to-day operations of the center is what makes it appealing for private functions.
The Makinson Aquatics Center continues to receive the highest ratings attainable for aquatic centers as determined by Ellis and Associates, a nation-wide company that rates lifeguards, facilities and the overall operations of aquatic centers around the world.
The aquatics team puts customers first and provides a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all users. Additionally, the City provides enhancements where possible and takes pride in maintaining the equipment, buildings and the grounds.
